Compact Spikemoss - Selaginella scopulorum

In this spore-bearing plant, the sterile stems are much shorter than the "cones," which produce the spores in the small, reddish structures at the bases of the leaves. Perhaps easy to overlook, but only a couple of locales in the Park are known for this non-flowering plant - in the southwest corner of the Park and at Box Canyon, where it was photographed, growing in thin soil on flat rocks, on July 1, 2014.
