Davidson's Penstemon - Penstemon davidsonii var. davidsonii
From a mat of tiny leaves, huge flowers rise on short stems. This variety of Davidson's Penstemon is uncommon and found growing among rocks on flats and slopes above 6500 feet on Mount Rainier itself. Variety menziesii, with pointed, toothed leaves, is more common between 5000 and 8000 feet elsewhere in the Park. Photographed on the Mount Fremont trail, August 17, 2011.
